Steelcon Releases Canada's First Plant-Specific Type III
Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for Open Web Steel Joists and Joist Girders
Toronto, Ontario - August 27, 2024 - Steelcon Group of Companies is proud to announce the publication of Canada’s first plant-specific Type III Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for our fabricated Open Web Steel Joists and Joist Girders. This significant milestone underscores our commitment to sustainability and transparency, providing owners, structural engineers, and construction sustainability professionals with critical data to make informed decisions on reducing the environmental impact of their projects.

“As the only Canadian-produced Open Web Steel Joists and Joist Girders with a plant-specific Type III EPD, our offering is a unique and valuable resource for those aiming to meet stringent green building standards,” said Steelcon President Danny Bianco. “This EPD further reinforces our leadership position in the industry, enabling project teams across Canada to quantify and reduce the environmental impact of their building designs.”

The newly published EPD represents a comprehensive, independently verified assessment of the environmental performance of Steelcon’s Open Web Steel Joists and Joist Girders, covering the full life cycle of these products. Steelcon’s joist EPD, published by EPD program provider Smart EPD, received independent external verification according to ISO 14025.

“Achieving this EPD demonstrates our dedication to driving sustainability within the construction industry,” said Steelcon Director of Engineering Solutions Scott Norris. “By providing transparent, verified environmental data for our products, we are not only enhancing our competitive edge but also empowering our clients to achieve their sustainability goals more effectively.”

This EPD represents a step forward in Steelcon’s commitment to providing structural steel solutions that address the environmental challenges of the building industry. Having this insight has allowed for further supply chain evaluation and highlighted opportunities to drive down the embodied carbon of our Open Web Steel Joists and Joist Girders even further.

The Steelcon Open Web Steel Joists and Joist Girders EPD can be accessed on the Smart EPD platform and has also been pushed via API to the Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator (“EC3”) tool. It is also available for download here.
